Hawaiian Design…..KAPA

One of my favorite Hawaiian Art forms is Kapa.  Kapa is a paper like cloth that is made from the interior bark of the Wauke plant, also known as paper mulberry.  Hawaiians created Kapa for clothing and used the most beautiful plant dyes for color.  By the end of the 19th century virtually all kapa making had ceased in Hawai'i and much of the knowledge had been lost.

Today, Kapa is reborn and the current show Mahala Hou Ke Kapa, at MACC our arts and cultural center, is a stunning exhibit of modern day Kapa.  I will be talking more about this art form in the future and will show how we have used the antique patterns, printed on fabric for Interior Design projects as custom drapery and bedding.
